Major Track Overhaul Causes Delays for Mumbai's Western Railway Trains
Western Railway Train Schedules Disrupted Due to Malad Station Maintenance
Local trains on Mumbai's Western Railway line are experiencing delays of 15 to 20 minutes this Monday morning. This disruption follows a significant 10-hour maintenance block at Malad station, which Western Railway officials attribute as the main cause.
Track Work and Safety Measures
During the maintenance block, which took place overnight from August 31 to September 1, tracks were modified to establish a new rail line. To ensure safety, trains are currently operating at reduced speeds. A Western Railway spokesperson clarified, "There are no technical failures. We have issued caution orders, which necessitate reduced train speeds."
Speed Limit and Infrastructure Upgrades
As a result of the caution orders, trains near Malad are now traveling at approximately 30 kilometers per hour. Over the weekend, a new track was introduced at Malad West for Virar-bound 'Down' slow trains. Additionally, a 1.4-kilometer stretch at Malad station was successfully commissioned during the overnight maintenance.
Ongoing Projects and Workforce Efforts
Western Railway has also begun constructing a sixth line between Goregaon and Kandivali stations to better separate suburban and long-distance trains. The 10-hour maintenance block involved extensive coordination among the Engineering, Signal & Telecommunication (S&T), and Electrical departments, with around 400 workers utilizing heavy machinery such as JCBs, tamping machines, and tower wagons.
